The Podlaskie Voivodeship is the green heart of Poland, with four national parks and the famous Białowieża Forest - a UNESCO site. Interesting factsCurrently, 3,156 species of butterflies from 73 families have been recorded in Poland, 164 of which are diurnal.
The largest European butterflies (also found in Poland) are the Death's-head Moth and the Pear-headed Moth.
The cutworms (Noctuidae), also found in Poland, such as Mamestra brassicae and Cosmia trapezina, can supplement their diet with other caterpillars, often of their own species, which is why they can be called "cannibals".
The largest butterflies in the world live in the tropical and subtropical zones. These include Ornithoptera alexandrae (genus Papilionidae). The wingspan of females of this species exceeds 280 mm, and the body weight is 25 g.
The spineless snowdrop butterfly (Acentria ephemerella genus Pyralidae) is a butterfly whose caterpillars live underwater. Furthermore, this species has two forms of females: a winged one living on land and one with reduced wings living underwater.
Butterflies live from a few hours to several months, depending on the species.
Butterflies are excellent fliers, among other things. Sphingids and thistles, which come to us from Africa, crossing the Alps along the way.
In addition to species whose larval stages feed on plants, there are also those that use ants for this purpose. For example, a blue tit larva must be taken to an anthill, where it grows, pupates, and leaves the anthill as a butterfly over the course of several months. The larvae of many blue tit species secrete chemicals that attract ants and neutralize their aggression. Some larvae produce a sweet secretion that ants adore, while others mimic ant larvae in appearance and behavior. In an anthill, a blue tit larva is provided with excellent protection from predators, which means that potentially more larvae will reach the imago stage and then produce their own offspring. A butterfly larva in an anthill is either fed by ants or feeds on ant larvae. With both strategies, food is usually plentiful. After a few months (usually after overwintering, the following year), the larva moves to the upper layers of the anthill, where pupation occurs. The butterfly emerges from the cocoon during the period of lowest ant activity. Species that use ants are quite sensitive to subtle environmental changes, and as a result, many of them are endangered in Europe. Several species in Poland use ants to care for their larvae, including the Tolejus Blue (Glaucopsyche teleius), the Arion (G. arion), the Rebel (G. rebeli), and the Alcon (G. alion).

Millions of species of fauna and flora inhabit this vibrant and diverse world we live in. Sometimes we don't even remember that nature exists beyond our cities and our comfort zones. There's so much wildlife that captivates and captures. Fortunately, photographers can share the beauty of this world and present us with wild scenes of animals we would never otherwise encounter.

Lepidoptera (from the Greek λεπίς lepis - "scale" and πτερόν pteron - "wing"; scaly-winged) is an order of winged insects, closely related to caddisflies. There are several conventional divisions of butterflies that are not based on actual relationships within this group. However, they can be convenient for recognition. Two divisions often found in books or popular atlases are based on appearance and flight time into diurnal butterflies (Rhopalocera) and moths (Heterocera), and based on size, into Macrolepidoptera (larger butterflies) and Microlepidoptera (smaller butterflies). Both of these divisions are artificial, but they can be used by remembering that, for example, many moths fly during the day, some have club-shaped antennae, some families included in Macrolepidoptera have very small representatives (e.g., Noctuidae), and conversely, some families included in Microlepidoptera have larger representatives (e.g., Pyralidae). It's also important to remember that these divisions overlap. After beetles, they constitute the second largest group of insects. Currently, there are approximately 150,000 species of butterflies in the world, over 3,000 of which are in Poland. They occur on every continent except Antarctica. Butterflies are among the most evolutionarily advanced insects. Their body, composed of segments, is protected by a chitinous cuticle. Individual segments are connected by membranous joints, allowing for freedom of movement. The cuticle is covered by a layer of fine scales. The body of a butterfly is composed of three parts: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. The head, spherical and separated from the thorax, is formed by the fusion of six segments. The head bears a pair of compound eyes, a pair of antennae, and a sucking mouthpart. The compound eyes are generally large, composed of smaller eyes called ommatidia. Butterflies perceive the world as a mosaic of tiny images. They perceive movement, but their visual parameters are much poorer than those of humans. The mouthparts are of the sucking type. Most butterflies feed on flower nectar. Only the most primitive families, such as the pterygoids (Micropterygidae), retain remnants of biting mouthparts. These butterflies feed primarily on pollen. The mouthpart is a long tube that the insect coils and conceals under its head. Some species also drink water using the mouthpart. The longest suckers are the hawk moths, which in some species are longer than the body. Antennae. Smell receptors are distributed throughout their entire surface, and the second segment contains the Johnston's organ. This is an organ of hearing and balance, detecting air vibrations. The thorax consists of three segments. The thorax bears three pairs of legs. These are slender and covered with delicate scales or hairs. Some species have receptors on them that allow them to receive chemical stimuli. The thorax of butterflies bears two pairs of wings made of a double-layered membrane stretched on veins located between its layers. The shapes and colors of butterfly wings are diverse, as are their proportions to body size. Butterflies that fly long distances have long, narrow, and pointed wings, while those that must make quick turns and evasive maneuvers have broad, distinctly rounded wings. The small mass relative to the size of the wings allows for a reduced frequency of wingbeats during flight – diurnal butterflies, such as the swallowtail, beat 300 times per minute. Moths, due to their more massive build, must beat significantly more often. The most frequently beating butterfly (5,000 beats per minute) is the common hawk-moth. The fastest butterflies can reach speeds of up to 55 kilometers per hour. Butterfly wings are covered with tiny scales. The scales' surface is uneven, usually grooved or ribbed, and they can be broad-bladed, hair-like, or ellipsoid. Some species have scent-producing scales (androconial), primarily in males. Abdomen: The part of the butterfly body that is visibly segmented. Females have a telescopic ovipositor at the end of their abdomens, used for egg-laying. Butterflies are insects that undergo complete metamorphosis. Depending on the species, butterfly eggs vary in shape and color, sometimes with a pattern of dots or lines. For an egg to develop, fertilization must occur. Fragrant substances play a significant role in this process. Both attract males and females. After accepting a mate, males transfer a spermatophore—a packet of sperm—that remains within the female's body until the eggs are laid. Females possess an ovipositor. It telescopes inside the abdomen and extends during egg-laying. The locations and methods of egg-laying are very diverse. Many nocturnal butterflies lay their eggs deep in bark cracks, which is why they have long ovipositors. Most diurnal butterflies glue them to plants. Some moths scatter their eggs in the grass during flight. The egg hatches into a caterpillar—a butterfly larva. It has a soft body, a clearly separated, strongly chitinized g
